Muscat the capital of Oman since 1784 has a great deal of charm and character and offers the combination of the relaxed atmosphere of an Indian Ocean town set amongst the well ordered life of a modern oil state. The original town of Muscat forms but a fraction of the administrative area, also known to non residents as Muscat. These areas have their own identities and may be some kilometres away from Muscat itself.

Muscat includes the memorable Al Alam Palace and the medieval forts of Jalali and Mirani. Close to these is Bait Zubair Museum with its well displayed collection of Omani heritage. Ruwi is principally known for its commercial business areas but in the Armed Forces Museum has one of the better Museums in town. Qurm has the principal shopping area for major western brands and several beach front hotels and Al Khuwayr is an expanding residential area with many government ministry buildings, embassies and the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque.
